This Information Applies To: Agilent 6000 Series LC/MS systems equipped with MS40+ rotary vane pumps
Issue
Instructions on how to replace the filter in an Agilent MS 40+ pump as part of annual pump maintenance
Background
The filter in the MS40+ pump should be replaced every 12 months of operation as part of an annual service on the pump. The pump fluid should also be replaced at this time (at least every 6 months), see Replacing the Pump Fluid in the MS-40+ Rotary Vane Pump detailed instructions on this task.
Items Required
Requirements
The LC/MS must be fully vented and the rough pump cooled to prevent any injury when handling. For further detail, see Venting and shutting down your Agilent 6000 series LC/MS System
Steps to Follow
Warning: Do not touch the filter cap or rough pump until they are cool. The filter cap and pump can be dangerously hot. Wear chemical resistant gloves and safety glasses when changing the filter.
Never open the filter cap while the pump is on. Hot oil can splash out and cause injury.
Do not touch the pump fluid. The residue from some samples may be toxic. Properly dispose of any fluid spills as per the MSDS shipped with the product
|
Caution: Use only the filter type and rough pump fluid appropriate for your pump (AVF 60 Gold oil for Agilent MS40+). The use of any other fluids can reduce pump life and will invalidate the pump warranty
|
1. Make sure the LC/MS is fully vented, the instrument has been turned off at the front power switch and the heated zones have cooled to below 40 °C. Ensure that the rough pump is cool enough to handle safely.
2. Unplug all power cords connected to the LC/MS from their power outlets.
Caution: If your LC/MS instrument includes a pump expander box, make sure you unplug both the main power cord and the pump expander cord from the wall outlet. |
3. Unscrew the filter cap and remove the O-ring located on the inside of the filter cap, see Figure 1.

4.Remove the used filter from the pump and remove the O-ring located on the rear of the filter, see Figure 2.

5. Install the new small O-ring supplied to the back end of the filter, then carefully insert it into the filter housing in the MS40+ pump, see Figure 3.

6. To ensure correct filter installation, make sure of the following:

7. Install the new large O-ring supplied with the new filter into the groove on the inside of the filter cap, then tighten the filter cap onto the pump, see Figure 5.

8. If the pump fluid also needs to be replaced, please see Replacing the Pump Fluid in the MS-40+ Rotary Vane Pump for detailed instructions on this task.
9. Plug in all power cords for the Instrument and rough pump. If no further maintenance on the instrument is required, the LC/MS can be switched on and pumped down to prepare for analysis.
