How to Change the Outlet Valve on a 1260 Isocratic or Quaternary Pump

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent 1260 Isocratic (G1310B) quaternary (G1311B) pump modules

Issue:

Required when:

  • The outlet valve is defective or leaking.
  • The pressure or leak test in Lab Advisor suggests the outlet valve may require replacement.
  • There is large increase in pressure ripple is observed.

Steps to follow

Tools Required:

  • 8710–1924 - Wrench, open 14 mm
  • 8710–0510 - Wrench, open 1/4 - 5/16 inch
  • 5067–5688 - Torque wrench, 1 - 25 Nm with 14 mm wrench

 Parts Required:

  • G1312-60067 - Valve outlet, 600 Bar 1220/1260
 Warning
Warning: This procedure risks exposure to hazardous, toxic, or flammable solvents and reagents. Wear appropriate PPE as described in the material handling and safety data sheet supplied by the chemical vendor, and always follow good laboratory practice.

1. Switch off the pump module and remove the pump front cover.

2. If possible, raise the solvent filters in each solvent bottle connect to the pump above the level of solvent in the bottle. This will minimize solvent leaking from the solvent tubes while performing this maintenance.

3. Using a 1/4-inch wrench, disconnect the valve capillary from the outlet valve. Using the 14 mm wrench, loosen the valve and remove it from the pump body (Figure 1).

Figure 1. Removing the valve capillary (1) and outlet valve (2) from the pump head

4. Do not disassemble the outlet valve, to prevent damaging the valve.

5. Install the new outlet valve and tighten the valve using a torque wrench (12 Nm). Reconnect the valve capillary (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Installing the Outlet Valve on the pump head

6. Reinstall the front cover and then power on the pump module.

If possible, run a system pressure test with the outlet of the purge valve blanked off using the appropriate blanking nut (Part No. 01080–83202). This checks that the pump flow path is pressure tight to a pressure higher than your application requires.

Cause: If old or aged Acetonitrile is left in the outlet ball valve, then the ball inside the valve can stick open or closed causing pressure and flow issues. Always flush pumps after use according to instructions given in the pump user manual.
