How to Create a New Database in Spectroscopy Database Administrator (SDA)

Issue

If the old database is full, or after a specific time interval, it is necessary to create a database in SDA. If you receive a message telling you that the database is full, you must create a new database. 

Requirements

To access SDA, the Windows user must be a member of the Windows SDAAdministrators group and Administrators group. See the article: How to Access Spectroscopy Database Administrator

Steps to Follow

1. Double click the SDAdministrator desktop icon to launch SDA (Figure 1).

2. In the Spectroscopy Database Administrator window, click Advanced Setup (Figure 2; Item 1).

3. Log on to the Server
   
   1. Go to the Connections tab (Figure 3; Item 1).
   2. Check if the server is listed under Select from this list. The server will be computername\SQLEXPRESS. If the server is listed (Figure 3; Item 2), skip ahead to step 3e. If no server is listed, proceed to step 3c.

   3. If no server is listed (Figure 4; Item 1), click the Browse... button (Figure 4; Item 2).

   4. Select the server name (the server will be computername\SQLEXPRESS) (Figure 5; Item 1) and click OK (Figure 5; Item 2).

   5. Click the server name to highlight it (Figure 6; Item 1) and click logon (Figure 6; Item 1).

4. Create a new database
   1. Go to the Database tab (Figure 7; Item 1).
   2. Click the Create subtab (Figure 7; Item 2).
   3. The default save location is shown on the line under Location (Figure 7; Item 3) and is C:\Spectroscopy Databases.
   4. If you wish you save the database to a different location, such as D:\Spectroscopy Databases, click the [...] button (Figure 7; Item 4) and choose a different location.
      

      Caution: It is recommended to save databases in C:\Spectroscopy Databases or D:\Spectroscopy Databases only. Once a database is created, Do Not move, rename, or delete the database without first detaching the database in SDA. Failure to detach first will result in software errors, making the software unusable, and an Agilent Service representative will need to resolve the issue.

   5. Enter a name for the new database (Figure 7; Item 5).
   6. Enter a size (from 500 to10,000MB) for the database (Figure 7; Item 6).
   7. Click the Create button (Figure 7; Item 7).

   8. From the Reason drop-down menu, select one of the options (Creation/Modification/Deletion) (Figure 8; Item 1) and add a comment for the action (Figure 8, Item 2), then click OK (Figure 8; Item 3).

   9. Once successfully created, the new database will be listed under Attached (Figure 9; Item 1).

5. Grant Windows built-in users access to the new database
   1. Go to the Database Accounts tab (Figure 10; Item 1).
   2. From the Server access list, select BUILTIN\Users (Figure 10; Item 2). 
   3. From the Database access list, select the new database (Figure 10; Item 3).
   4. Click the >> button to add built-in users to the new database (Figure 10; Item 4).
      

       

      Tips: The previous steps will grant Windows users who are members of the local windows users group access to the database. It is also possible to compare the database access list of an existing database and mirror the setup of the existing database on the new database.

   5. From the Reason drop-down menu, select one of the options (Creation/Modification/Deletion) (Figure 11; Item 1) and add a comment for the action (Figure 11; Item 2), then click OK (Figure 11; Item 3).

   6. Once successfully added, the BUILTIN\Users will be listed under the new database (Figure 12; Item 1).

6. Log off SDA
   1. Go to the Connections tab (Figure 13; Item 1) and click Log off (Figure 13; Item 2).

   2. If you receive the message: Do you want to save the changes to your preferences before exiting? Click Yes (Figure 14; Item 1).

7. Exit out of SDA

Tips: For ICP-MS MassHunter, after creating a database, the folder path must be updated in Change User Access Control application.
