How to Power Cycle Agilent 5000 ICP-OES Systems

Answer

This Information Applies To: The Agilent 5000 ICP-OES Series and Agilent ICP Expert Software

Issue

How to reset the Agilent ICP-OES system when experiencing a communication error between the instrument and software, or if the instrument seems to be experiencing issues when trying to light the plasma or run a worksheet. These steps will help to determine if there is a hardware issue with the instrument.

Steps to Follow

 Caution
Caution: Save all data in ICP Expert software before shutting down.

Before performing the following steps, save and close any data or methods that are open and turn off the plasma (if on).

  1. Turn off the water chiller.Turn off the chiller by pressing the power button on the front of the unit, then switch off the circuit breaker switch on the back of the unit.

  2. Close the software and shut down the PC:

    1. Select File >Exit after saving your data in the Agilent ICP Expert Software, or select the Exit Icon on the ICP Expert launch screen (Figure 1)

    2. Select the Windows option to Shutdown the PC (right click the Windows icon).

  3. Turn off any autosamplers connected to the ICP-OES. If using an Agilent SPS 4 Autosampler, turn off the SPS 4 by pressing the power switch located near the power cord.

  4. Turn off the ICP-OES. Press and release the lower left front Standby button (Figure 2). Wait until the instrument status LED (upper right side) has a steady flash, or is off. This should take a minute or two, depending on model of ICP-OES. Then press the rocker switch (Power) located on lower left rear side of the instrument next to the power cord (Figure 3) to position "0" (Off).

  5. Allow the instrument to power completely down and remain in an off state for five to ten minutes before proceeding.

  6. When powering on the system, the order will be reversed.

  7. Turn on the ICP-OES:

    1. Press the lower left rear side switch (Power) on the ICP-OES to position "1". Wait a minute or two for the instrument to start the powering on process.

    2. Press the lower left front button (Standby) on the ICP-OES.

    3. Allow the instrument to fully initialize before proceeding. Once the instrument status LED (upper right side) is a flashing amber color, proceed to the next step.

  8. Turn on the autosampler:

    1. Press the power button on the SPS 4 autosampler, and allow it to go through initialization.

    2. The probe should move to all four corners of the autosampler and return to the rinse station.

  9. Turn on the PC and Software:

    1. Turn on the PC

    2. Open the ICP Expert software.

    3. If the software does not automatically connect to the instrument, select the Instrument page option, then select Connect and choose the ICP-OES from the drop-down menu. If more than one instrument is set up for your software, please choose the corresponding ICP-OES that has been restarted.

    4. Successful instrument connection can be verified with a solid green upper right side instrument status LED on the ICP-OES.

The ICP-OES system has now been restarted, and if no errors are present, proceed as normal. If errors are present, please contact Agilent Technical Support.
