Finding Lost IP address of 5000 Series ICP-OES - Instrument Locator

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent 5100, 5110, 5800, and 5900 ICP-OES systems

Issue

When troubleshooting communication issues between Agilent 5000 Series ICP-OES and the instrument controlling computer, it is necessary to know the IP address of the ICP-OES.

If the IP address of an instrument has been lost, it can be rediscovered using the ICP Instrument Locator tool. This tool will list the IP address and host name of all 5100, 5110, 5800 and 5900 ICP-OES instruments on the local network segment.

Steps to Follow:

  1. Close ICP Expert

  2. Confirm that the instrument is powered on and the status indicator light on the front top-right corner is blinking yellow.

  3. Run the ICP Instrument Locator tool. The tool can be found in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Agilent\ICP\Expert\ InstrumentLocator\ICPInstrumentLocator.exe (see Figure 1)

  4. The Instrument Locator will display all 5000 Series ICP-OES instrument IP addresses and host names on the local network (See Figure 2).

    Figure 2. Instrument Locator

If more than one instrument is on the network, you will likely see multiple entries. In this case, do the following:

    1. Log in to the computer as a local user

    2. Disconnect the computer from the network

    3. Connect the ICP-OES and computer directly with a LAN cable and bypass the switching hub (if installed).

    4. Run Instrument Locator using this standalone setup to determine the IP address of the ICP-OES.

  5.  Write down the instrument IP address, close Instrument Locator, and open ICP Expert.

  6. In ICP Expert, click the Instrument button to open the Instrument window. From the Connect drop-down list, select the correct IP address (see Figure 3). If the IP address is not listed, click New Connection and type the IP address in.

    Connect.

If the connection is unsuccessful, it may be necessary to change the computer IP address and Subnet mask. See the article How to Set up Communication Between Agilent 5000 Series ICP-OES Instruments and Agilent ICP Expert Software for more assistance on this topic.

Tips: Keep in mind that ICP Instrument Locator will list all instruments that are responding. Therefore you will need to pick the right one.
ICP Instrument Locator might also list some other Agilent instruments like Cary 3500.
