DS 402 Foreline Pump Oil Change for ICP-MS Systems

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent ICP-MS (7700/7800/8800)

Issue

How to replace the foreline pump oil in the DS 402.

Background

The DS 402 oil should be replaced at least every 3 months or when the oil color indicates it needs to be changed.

Check the foreline pump oil color and level monthly.

Warning:
  • The surface of the foreline pump may be HOT, do not touch the pump until it has cooled.
  • Never add pump oil while the pump is on.
  • Do not touch the oil. The oil may be hot. The residue from some samples is toxic.
  • Properly dispose of the oil according to local law and regulations.
  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses (goggles), and a protective mask.

Caution:
  • When you turn off the foreline pump, wait at least 15 seconds before restarting it.
  • Use only Agilent recommended pump oil appropriate for your pump. Using a different oil can substantially reduce pump life and invalidates the pump warranty.

Items Required

  • AVF Platinum Foreline Pump Oil (p/n X3760-64004)
    • Note: AVF Platinum Oil is the replacement oil for all DS 402 pumps used with Agilent ICP-MS regardless of the label on the pump.
  • Oil collection container, at least 1 liter in size
  • Funnel
  • Paper towels
  • Chemical resistant gloves
  • Safety glasses (goggles)
  • Protective mask
  • Oil drain hose kit (p/n 9499375M003)

Steps to Follow

  1. Turn the foreline pump off (vacuum off)
  2. Prepare a container to collect the oil
  3. Press the foreline pump breaker switch, on the back of the ICP-MS, to the on (I) position (up).

Caution: Make sure that the sampling cone is connected to the ICP-MS interface before proceeding. Damage to the foreline pump during oil drain process could result if the sampling cone is not installed.
  4. From the Hardware menu in MassHunter, click the "Mainframe" image and select "Drain Foreline Pump Oil..." from the drop-down menu (Figure 1).

  10. Remove the oil fill cap on the top of the pump (Figure 7; Item 1).
  11. Pour in about 0.8 liters of the new oil using a funnel.
  12. View the oil-level sight-glass to visually confirm that the oil level is within the acceptable range (Figure 7; Item 2).
  13. Close the oil cap (Figure 7; Item 1).

  14. After maintenance is complete, turn on the foreline pump (vacuum on).
  15. Dispose of the used oil using the correct laboratory procedures and according to local law and regulations.
