E2M18 and E2M18F Foreline Pump Oil Change for ICP-MS Systems

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent ICP-MS (7500/7700/8800)

Issue

How to replace the Forline Pump Oil in the E2M18 or E2M18F?

Background

The E2M18 oil should be replaced at least every three months or when the oil color indicates it needs to be changed.

The E2M18F (Fomblin model) oil should be replaced every six months. Note, the Fomblin Oil will not change color even when it is old/dirty.

Check the foreline pump oil color (if applicable) and level monthly.

Items Required

  • Foreline pump oil
    • For E2M18 use AVF Platinum Foreline Pump Oil (p/n: X3760-64004)
    • For E2M18F (Fomblin) use Fomblin Oil (p/n 5069-4478)

Steps to Follow

Warning:
  • The surface of the foreline pump may be HOT, do not touch the pump until it has cooled.
  • Never add pump oil while the pump is on.
  • Do not touch the oil. The oil may be hot. The residue from some samples is toxic.
  • Properly dispose of the oil according to local law and regulations.
  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and a protective mask

Caution:
  • When you turn off the foreline pump, wait at least 15 seconds before restarting it.
  • Use only Agilent recommended pump oil appropriate for your pump. Using a different oil can substantially reduce pump life and invalidates the pump warranty.
  1. Turn off the foreline pump (vacuum off) and confirm the foreline pump breaker switch on the back of the ICP-MS is in the off (O) position (down).
  2. Allow the foreline pump to cool as it may be hot to the touch.
  3. Prepare a container to collect the oil and place the container in front of the foreline pump
  4. Open the cap of the oil filler (Figure 1; Item 1) then remove the cap of the oil outlet to drain the oil (Figure 1; Item 2).

  9. After maintenance is complete, turn on the foreline pump (vacuum on).
  10. After 30 minutes, inspect the pump for leaks.
  11. Dispose of the used oil using the correct laboratory procedures and according to local law and regulations.
