Issue

How to replace the Forline Pump Oil Mist Filter and Odor Element in the E2M18 or E2M18F?

Background

The oil mist filter and odor element should be replaced yearly, or if the oil level exceeds the line on the side of the filter assembly.

Warning: The surface of the foreline pump may be HOT, do not touch the pump until it has cooled. Never replace the oil mist filter or odor element while the pump is on. Properly dispose of the oil mist filter and odor element according to local law and regulations. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and safety glasses (goggles).

Items Required

• 4 mm Hex wrench
• Oil mist filter element (p/n 1535-4970)
• Odor element, 5/pack (p/n 50639153)

Steps to Follow

Checking the Oil Mist Filter and Odor Element

1. Confirm that the ballast valve on the foreline pump is open. Under normal operating conditions, the ballast valve should always be open 3.5 turns counterclockwise from closed position (Figure 1).

2. Locate the filter assembly oil line and check that the amount of oil does not exceed the limit (Figure 2). If the amount of oil is above the line, replace the oil mist filter and deodorizing element.

Replacing the Oil Mist Filter and Odor Element

1. Turn off the foreline pump (vacuum off) and confirm the foreline pump breaker switch on the back of the ICP-MS is in the off (O) position (down).
2. Disconnect the exhaust hose from the top of the filter assembly (Figure 3).

3. Remove the fixing screws on the oil mist filter case using a hex wrench, and remove the upper cover (Figure 4).

4. Remove the odor element and oil mist filter (Figure 5).

5. Clean the inside the upper and lower filter case, and the D-seal with paper towels (Figure 6).

6. Refit the D-seal on the lower filter case (Figure 7).

7. Confirm that there is an O-ring attached to the new oil mist filter element (Figure 8).

8. Install the new oil mist filter element in the lower case, and place the odor element on top (Figure 9).

9. Refit the upper case and fixing screws. Tighten each screw evenly, a little at a time, until the case is snug (Figure 10).

10. Reconnect the exhaust hose to the top of the filter assembly (Figure 11).

11. Turn on the foreline pump (vacuum on).
12. Dispose of the used oil mist filter and odor element using the correct laboratory procedures and according to local law and regulations.
