Error Accessing Change User Access Control (UAC) Application ICP-MS MassHunter

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent ICP-MS MassHunter Software 4.5 and later with User Access Control (UAC). 

Issue

When trying to access Change User Access Control (UAC) Application and the user gets permissions errors, they are usually related to the configuration of the current user account.

Background

To access Change User Access Control, you must log in to Windows as a user who belongs to the Windows Administrator group, and the user who logs into ICP-MS MassHunter must belong to the OpenLab Shared Services (OLSS) Control Panel ICPMHAdmin group. In addition, User Account Control in Windows Control Panel must be disabled.

If you see the dialog box in Figure 1, your Windows user is not a member of the Administrators group, or the User Account Control Settings in Windows control panel is not set to never notify.

If you see the error in Figure 2, your OLSS Control Panel user is not a member of the ICPMHAdmin group, or the ICPMHAdmin group has been renamed.

Steps to Follow

• Set User Account Control Settings to Never Notify
• Check if a User is a Member of the ICPMHAdmin Group
• Edit User Group Membership in OLSS Control Panel
  

Set User Account Control Settings to Never Notify

1. Log in to the computer as a Windows user who is a member of the Administrators group
   

   Tips: For instructions on adding a user to the Administrators group, see the article How to Access Spectroscopy Database Administrator.

2. In the Windows search bar, type change user account control settings (Figure 3; Item 1) and under Best match, click Change User Account Control (Figure 3; Item 2).

3. In the User Account Control Settings window, click and drag the slider to Never notify then click OK (Figure 4).

4. Restart the computer and log in as a Windows user who is a member of the Administrators group.
   

Check if a User is a Member of the ICPMHAdmin Group

1. Double click the OLSS Control Panel desktop icon (Figure 5).

2. Log in to OLSS Control Panel (Figure 6).

3. From the left panel, click My Settings (Figure 7; Item 1). If the user already has the ICPMHAdmin Group membership (Figure 7; Item 2), no further action is required and this user will have access to Change User Access Control.
   
   

   Tip: Contact your system administrator if you do not have Group membership: ICPMHAdmin. They will either need to add you to the group, or a different user who is already a member of the ICPMHAdmin group will need access Change User Access Control. Proceed to step 3 for instructions on how to edit a user.

   Confirmation: Verify that the group name is exactly ICPMHAdmin. Any change to the group name will disrupt access to Change User Access Control. If the group name has changed, you must edit the group and rename back to ICPMHAdmin.

Edit User Group Membership in OLSS Control Panel

1. Double click the OLSS Control Panel desktop icon (Figure 8).

2. Log in to OLSS Control Panel as an OLSS Control Panel administrator. This user is a member of the Everything role (Figure 9).

3. From the left panel, click My Settings (Figure 10; Item 1) to verify that the user is a member of the Everything role (Figure 10; Item 2). Only a user who has Role membership: Everything can edit a user. If the current user is not a member of the Everything role, contact your system administrator. They will need to log in to OLSS Control Panel to edit/view the membership of other users.

4. From the left panel, click Users (Figure 11; Item 1) then highlight the user that needs to access Change User Access Control (Figure 11; Item 2), and from the top ribbon, click Edit User (Figure 11; Item 3).

5. Click the Group Membership tab (Figure 12; Item 1), and select the box next to ICPMHAdmin (Figure 12; Item 2) if it is not already selected. Click OK

6. Close out of OLSS Control Panel.
   
   

To launch the Change User Access Control application, from the Windows Start button, click the ICP-MS MassHunter Workstation folder > Change User Access Control (Figure 13).
