  • How to Remove and Inspect the ICP-MS Torch, Bonnet, and Platinum Shield Plate

This Information Applies To: Agilent ICP-MS systems (7700/7800/7850/7900/8800/8900) Issue The torch, bonnet, and shield plate must be removed and inspected during routine maintenance, and when troubleshooting plasma ignition problems. Faults with the torch, bonnet, or shield plate can cause plasma ignition problems. If the plasma will not light, remove these components, inspect, and replace any damaged parts before trying the parafilm test . Items Required Standard Torch, quartz, 2...
  • ICP-MS Parafilm Test for Plasma Ignition Problems

This Information Applies To: Agilent ICP-MS systems (7700/7800/7850/7900/8800/8900) Issue This procedure tests for an air leak in the sample introduction system, or fault with spray chamber draining, by sealing the end of the torch with a piece of parafilm and testing plasma ignition. Sealing with parafilm isolates the torch from the rest of the sample introduction system. If the plasma ignites with the parafilm in place, the ICP-MS hardware is operational and the plasma ignition problem is...

  • Cleaning the ICP-OES Nebulizer

This Information Applies To: Agilent 500 Series ICP-OES (5100, 5110, 5800, 5900) Issue The ICP-OES nebulizer converts the liquid sample into an aerosol as it enters the spray chamber. A dirty or partially blocked nebulizer traps sample, which leads to poor reproducibility and reduced sensitivity. Droplets on the internal surface of the spray chamber can indicate poor conversion of liquid to mist. ICP-OES overview The ICP-OES sample introduction components are detailed in Figure 1 . ...
  • Maintaining the Axial Pre-Optic Window

This Information Applies To: Agilent 5100, 5110, 5800, 5900 ICP-OES Issue The axial pre-optic window needs checking from time to time to ensure it is clean. If the axial pre-optic window is dirty, it must be cleaned or replaced to ensure adequate sensitivity in the UV region of the emission spectrum. If the axial wavelength calibration fails for wavelengths less than 190 nm, this may indicate that the axial pre-optic window is dirty. Steps to follow Follow the steps in this article...

How to Install the ICP-MS Torch, Bonnet, and Platinum Shield Plate

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent ICP-MS systems (7700/7800/7850/7900/8800/8900)

Issue

The torch, bonnet, and platinum shield plate must be installed after performing maintenance, or replacing with new components.

Items Required

  • Standard Torch, quartz, 2.5 mm id - not suitable for samples containing hydrofluoric acid. (p/n G3280-80053)
see the Agilent Spectroscopy Supplies Catalog if you use a non-standard torch
  • Bonnet (p/n G1833-65421)
  • Platinum Shield Plate (p/n G1833-65419)

Steps to Follow

  1. Install the platinum shield plate over the end of the torch, ensuring the alignment hole in the shield fits over the torch projection (Figure 1).

  2. Slide the bonnet over the platinum shield plate with the lip facing the base of the torch. The lip of the bonnet will rest against the shield plate torch projection (Figure 2).

  3. Guide the end of the torch through the work coil being careful to not drop the bonnet, and ensure the torch alignment projection fits into the torch stand groove (Figure 3).

  4. Lock the torch in place with the torch stand clip (Figure 4).

  5. Connect the plasma and auxiliary gas lines to the torch and then tighten the connectors by hand until finger tight (Figure 5).

  6. Slide the spray chamber block to the right side, to connect the torch and connection tube and tighten the thumbscrew on the bottom of the spray chamber block (Figure 6).

  7. Install the clamp that connects that torch and connection tube (Figure 7).

  8. Install the torch box cover and secure the torch box catch clip (Figure 8).
