Agilent 1260 Infinity refractive index detector - does is us a lamp or LED? with which wavelength?

  • Hello,

The RI uses a lamp and since it's works on refractive index differences, it doesn't use a wavelength.  The RI is what is called a "bulk" detector.

If you are thinking you can replace the lamp, it's part of the optical unit and when it fails [does last a very long time] the replace strategy is to replace the entire optical unit.  It requires alignment which can only be done in the factory.

  • Agreed. It's a tungsten lamp, which is fixed inside the optical unit. The lamps lasts very long. Most RID failures are caused by incorrect handling/insufficient housekeeping anyway. Always flushing both sides of the cell and all tubing with water, followed by IPA, is probably the best advice.
