Neither GC nor MS Data Collected

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent GC/MS systems

Issue

A single run or sequence run terminated with error "Neither GC nor MS data collected consult logbook". Information in the error logbook does not point to the root cease of the error. 

Resolution

Check the following possible sources of the issue:

  • Method and sequence

    1. Load a different method and try a single run. If run completes successfully, the previous method file is probably corrupted.
    2. Load the default method file (default.M) and recreate a new method using it as a template. Save As new method name.
    3. Run this new method as a single run. 
    4. Do the same for the sequence file. Load a default sequence (default.S) and recreate a new sequence using it as a template. Save As new name.
    5. Reboot and GC and MS and then once the instrument is in a ready state, rerun the rebuilt sequence with new rebuilt method. The Sequence should be completed without error. 

  • Faulty remote cable between GC and MS

    1. Check that the remote cable is connected properly between GC and MS.
    2. If the cable is suspected faulty, swap it with the one from another instrument that has been verified working, if available.

  • Filament is not ignited during a run

    1. Visually check if filament is ignited during a run.
    2. If a blown filament is suspected, switch to another filament before starting a run. For a guide on how to switch the filament, see the article: No Emission Current During Tuning on GC/MSD Systems

  • GC runtime is shorter than the MS solvent delay

    • Adjust the GC runtime or MS solvent delay so that the GC runtime is equal or greater than the MS solvent delay.

  • Inlet/Injection Source

    1. Check that the Inlet/Injection types are chosen correctly and make sure that the Use MS check box is selected. With this selection, the MS will be used for data collection, see Figure 1.

    2. Reboot entire system including the GC, MS, and computer. To verify if signal is collected, do a manual injection by setting the injection source to manual and starting a run without injecting anything.
    3. If data is collected following manual injection, proceed to do injection with autosampler. Remember to update the injection source to autosampler.
    4. Confirm whether data is collected from the autosampler injection. If the issue still persists, contact your local Agilent support representative.
