Troubleshooting “Arm Movement Failed” Error in Fraction Collectors

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent Analytical Fraction Collector G1364A/C/F and G5664A/B

Issue

If users do not configure the actual height of the test tubes used to collect fractions, they might see an error of “arm movement failed” in the fraction collector when submitting injections in the software.

Background

The fraction collector recognizes the test tube tray automatically, however, the test tube tray can accommodate test tubes with different heights. With an analytical scale fraction collector, such as G1364A/C/F, and G5664A/B, it is only possible to use test tube up to 48 mm high due to the length of the standard 50 mm analytical needle.

This limitation can be extended to 75 mm if the standard 50 mm analytical needle is replaced by the 20 mm needle assembly and the wellplate adapter is removed.

Steps to Follow

  1. In Instrument Status, right-click the Fraction Collector icon. From the contextual menu, click Modify > Vessel Dimensions (Figure 1).

Location of vessel dimensions in fraction collector.
Figure 1. Location of vessel dimensions in fraction collector

  2. Mark the adjacent check box Modify on the appropriate test tubes.
  3. Once the desired Modify box is checked, users can modify the height from 100 to 48 mm in the Height [mm] column (Figure 2).

    Modify heights of test tubes.

  4. Click Ok to save the modified values.
  5. In Instrument Status, under Fraction Collector, click On to clear out the error message. Users then can continue with their runs.

If after the previous procedure the error is still happening, contact your local Agilent service representative.
