This Information Applies To: Agilent 5000 Series ICP-OES (5100/5110/5800/5900) Issue The ICP-OES torch plasma ionizes the introduced gas or aerosol stream. In normal operating conditions, incomplete ionization occurs and material is deposited on the torch surface. Build up of deposits can create blockages, damage the torch or interact with the sample stream causing poor precision, accuracy, and memory effects. ICP-OES overview The ICP-OES sample introduction components are detailed in...

  • General Recommendations for Using an Agilent RID

This Information Applies To: Agilent Refractive Index Detectors, G1362A and G7162A/B. Issue: The RID is sensitive to its environment and can experience stability problems when exposed to contamination, vibrations, mechanical shocks, or changes in temperature or pressure. Resolution: Considerations on the general set-up: To avoid cross-talk between different solvent channels, preferably use an isocratic pump when operating a RID. If it is not possible to use an isocratic pump, consider...

This Information Applies To: Agilent Fluorescence Detectors G1321A, G1321B, G7121A, G7121B Issue This article describes how to diagnose a leak in your fluorescence detector (FLD) module. Steps to Follow Confirm the leak error originated in the FLD module before starting this procedure. See Determining which Module is Causing the Shutdown Error Due to a Leak Warning : The following procedure risks exposure to solvents in the flow path of the FLD flow cell. Always wear safety...

Prevent Blocking of Solvent Filters

Answer

This Information Applies To: All Agilent Pumps.

Issue:

Contaminated solvents or algae growth in your solvent bottle will reduce the lifetime of the solvent filter and will influence the performance of the pump module. This is especially true for aqueous solvents or phosphate buffers (pH 4 to 7). The following suggestions will prolong lifetime of the solvent filter and will maintain the performance of the module.

Resolution:

• Use a sterile, if possible amber, solvent bottle to slow down algae growth.

• Filter solvents through filters or membranes that remove algae.

• Exchange solvents every two days or refilter.

• If the application permits add 0.0001 – 0.001 M sodium azide to the solvent.

• Place a layer of argon on top of your solvent.

• Avoid exposure of the solvent bottle to direct sunlight.
