Troubleshooting a Leak Error in a Fluorescence Detector

Issue

This article describes how to diagnose a leak in your fluorescence detector (FLD) module.

Steps to Follow

Confirm the leak error originated in the FLD module before starting this procedure. See Determining which Module is Causing the Shutdown Error Due to a Leak

  
Warning: The following procedure risks exposure to solvents in the flow path of the FLD flow cell. Always wear safety goggles and appropriate gloves for the solvents used in your LC system before performing the following steps.

 

  1. Remove the front cover of the FLD module and dry completely the FLD module leak sensor with a tissue to prevent the leak error from reoccurring and stopping pump flow. Reset the FLD module to clear any leak errors if necessary. 
  2. Cover the area under the FLD Flow Cell with paper towel or tissues to avoid triggering the leak sensor with any leaks during the following steps.
  3. Start pump flow and carefully check for any leaks at the Inlet and Outlet fittings located on the front of the FLD flow cell (see Figure 1). If no droplets of solvent can be seen forming at the fittings, but the cell is still leaking from underneath or behind the flow cell, then an internal leak inside the flow cell is likely.

    Caution: Confirm that the FLD lamp is tuned off before removing the flow cell.
  4. Stop the pump flow.
  5. Remove the flow cell and visually check the back side of the flow cell.
    If leak or rust is observed, flow cell replacement is recommended.
