How to Power Off the ICP-MS Foreline Pump (Vacuum Off)

Issue

How to power off the Agilent ICP-MS Foreline Pump to perform maintenance, or when fully powering off the Agilent ICP-MS System.

Background

The ICP-MS MassHunter Software controls the pump’s ON/OFF control, which will transition the ICP-MS System from standby mode to shutdown mode.

If software communication is not possible, it is possible to shift from standby to shutdown mode by pressing the vacuum ON/OFF switch on the ICP-MS. The switch is located under the ICP-MS large cover.

Steps to Follow

1. Turn off the plasma (if it is on).
2. Wait for the instrument to reach standby mode (Status LED solid Orange)
3. Turn off the vacuum. Click the preferred method below for specific instructions for Step 3.
   • For ICP-MS MassHunter 4.6 and below
   • For MassHunter 5.1 and above
   • Using the switch located under the ICP-MS large cover 

3a. For ICP-MS MassHunter 4.6 and below: Click the drop-down arrow next to the Hardware button and select Vacuum Off (Figure 1)

Go to to Step 4.

3b. For MassHunter 5.1 and above: Click the Dashboard tab on the left, then click on the Mainframe image. Select Vacuum from the menu (Figure 2)

Go to to Step 4.

3c. Using the switch located under the ICP-MS large cover

Warning: When the plasma is lit, do not open the top covers. Confirm that the ICP-MS is in standby mode before continuing.

1. Open the ICP-MS large cover (Figure 3, Item 1)

2. Locate the Vacuum ON/OFF Switch (Figure 3, Item 2 and Figure 4).

3. Press and hold the Vacuum On/Off Switch on the ICP-MS. Release the button once the status indicator begins to blink.

Go to to Step 4.

4. Wait for the instrument to reach shutdown mode.
5. Locate the foreline pump breaker switch on the back of the ICP-MS (Figure 5) and switch it to the off (O) position (down).
