How to Power Off Agilent ICP-MS Systems

This Information Applies To: Agilent ICP-MS systems (7700/7800/7850/7900/8800/8900)

Issue

How to power off Agilent ICP-MS systems before maintenance, for long-term shutdown, or for power cycling the instrument. Power cycling may be required when troubleshooting communication, lighting the plasma, or running batches issues.

Caution: Before performing the following steps, save and close any batches or data that are open, turn off the plasma, and close all open applications on the computer.

Steps to Follow

1. Turn off the chiller or heat exchanger using the power button/switch on the front of the unit. For chillers, next switch off the circuit breaker switch on the back of the unit to the off (O) position.
2. Turn off any autosamplers connected to the ICP-MS. If using an Agilent SPS 4 Autosampler, turn off the SPS 4 by pressing the power switch located near the power cord to the off (O) position.
3. Turn off the Foreline Pump (Vacuum off), while the instrument is in standby mode, to put the instrument in shutdown mode.
4. Close the ICP-MS MassHunter Software, once the instrument reaches shutdown mode.
5. Close all other applications open on the computer, and power off the computer.
6. Press and release the front power button (Figure 1). Wait until the power button light is no longer solid green.

7. Press the foreline pump breaker switch, on the back of the ICP-MS, to the off (O) position if it is not already (Figure 2; Item 1).
   Note: This step may have been already performed during the foreline pump power off.
8. Press the main power breaker switch, on the back of the ICP-MS, to the off (O) position (Figure 2; Item 2)

9. The ICP-MS System is now powered off.

Tips: If powering back on, wait 10 minutes before proceeding. When powering back on the system, the order will be reversed.
