MSD Fault: RFPA Difficulty

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent 5975 and 5977 Series GC/MSD systems.

Issue

During tuning, MassHunter prompted the error message: "MSD Fault- RFPA Difficulty", and tune action stopped.

 

 Steps to Follow

  1. Try to reconfigure the GC/MS. See article: How To Configure a New GC/MSD with the Agilent GC/MS Configuration Editor.
  2. If autotune still failed, try to tune starting with default tune, as a corrupted tune file could be one of the reasons for the failure. See the article: How to Reset the Agilent GC/MSD Tune File to Default Values
      
    Tips:
    Default tune file for 5975 is x:\MSDChem\mssetup\5975\, default tune file will be pasted into path x:\MSDCHEM\n\5975\ (where x is the installation drive of MSD productivity ChemStation folder, n is the instrument number).
    Default tune file for 5977 is C:\GCMS\mssetup\5977\, default tune file will be pasted into path x:\MassHunter\GCMS\n\5977\ (where x is the installation drive of MassHunter folder, n is the instrument number)
  3. If reseting the the tune file does not work, Vent the instrument.
  4. Make sure that all cables, especialy the ribbon cable at the side board is fully seated in the connector. (See Figure 1.)

  5. Pump down the instrument, wait until the system it is stable and then autotune again.
  6. If the issue persists, contact your local Agilent support representative.
