Pumping Down Single Quad GC/MS using OpenLab CDS

Issue

Turn on and pump down the Single Quad GC/MS to an operating vacuum using OpenLab CDS software.

Background

The GC/MS needs to operate at a vacuum that is high enough to allow good transmission of ions, which are generated at the source through to the quad and detector. 

Requirements

This procedure starts with the MS powered down and in a vented state at atmospheric pressure with the vent valve open. 

Steps to Follow

  1. Close the vent valve on the front of the MS by turning it clockwise until finger-tight. See the User Manual of the MS for the vent valve location.
  2. Plug the MS power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
  3. Turn on the MS power switch.
  4. Press lightly on the metal box that is outside of the hinged analyzer door to ensure a good seal between the inner door surface and the analyzer O-ring while the rough pump starts up and creates enough vacuum to hold the door in place. When hearing a change in the sound of the rough pump once this seal occurs, you can stop pressing against the metal box.
  5. Start OpenLab Acquisition program. If the MS was configured for multiple ion source types, you are prompted to select the ion source that is currently installed by clicking on it.
  6. If the selected ion source in the previous step does not match the source used in the current method's tune file, you have to enter a method with the correct ion source type. Load the correct method for the source type.
  7. Click Method > MSD > Vent Pump Down and request tune control . You can monitor the pumpdown progress status from this window. See Figure 1.

  8. Turn on the transfer line heater and the GC oven. Click OK when these have been turned on.
  9. The software will turn on the ion source and mass filter (quad) heaters. The temperature setpoints are stored in the current autotune file. The pump down status and "the MSD actual parameters" in comparison to "the criteria required for pump down completion" is shown.
  10. When the MS pump down criteria is met, wait an additional 2 hours for the MS to reach thermal equilibrium. Data acquired before the MS has reached thermal equilibrium may not be reproducible.
  11. Tune the MS before running any samples.
