How to Configure Direct Communication Between 7890B and 7697A Headspace

This Information Applies To: Agilent 7890B GC system and 7697A headspace sampler

Issue

The 7697 Headspace Sampler can be configured to communicate directly with the 7890B GC. When this direct communication is configured, the 7697A headspace gets the 7890B GC column configuration, oven program, synchronizes with the GC clock, and follows the GC instrument schedule, such as wake-up and sleep.

Requirements

This feature requires a headspace sampler with firmware A.01.06 or greater, and a 7890B GC with firmware B.02.02 or greater. If necessary, see instructions on updating Agilent GC Firmware.

Steps to Follow

  1.  At the headspace sampler keyboard,
    1. Press [Config] and scroll to Follow 7890B, then press [On/Yes].
    2. Press [Options], then go to Communications > GC. Enter the IP address of the GC, then press [Enter].

2. At the GC keyboard         

    1. Press [Front Injector] if the headspace sampler is connected to the GC front inlet, or press [Back Injector] if it is connected to the GC back inlet
    2. Scroll to No Headspace, then press [Mode/Type]. A list of headspace sampler models appears. Scroll to the correct model, then press [Enter].
    3. Press [Options], then select Communications.
    4. Scroll to the IP address entry for the headspace sampler, either Fr. Headspace or Bk. Headspace. Enter the IP address of the headspace sampler.
    5. Press [Front Injector] or [Back Injector] as applicable. A new Communication line appears and shows Communications Disabled.
    6. Scroll to the Communications Disabled line and press [Off/No]. The line changes to connected time.
    7. Scroll down to display a read-only summary of the headspace sampler configuration which the GC obtained from the sampler. 

 If the communications fail, check the IP addresses

    1. Verify that the GC's IP address is correct in the headspace sampler, and that the headspace sampler's IP address is correct in the GC.
    2. Also check that both instruments are turned on and connected to the LAN. Verify all LAN cable connections.
