I got a very basic questions, to explain to a trainee. I recognised that some questions from him i could not answer for sure.
The carrier Gas is to transport the Sample. The last system we used has N2 + H2. One of them has even He.
I saw i pressurised Air Vent leading to the Hydrocarbon Filter and after going to "Detector Air "
I assume that the Gas DONT run over the column. It would not make sense to me.

Take a look at the below graphic. It shows the entry points of each gas. Helium enters the bottom as carrier, H2 and Makeup gas (N2 in your case) enter from the side at the jet, air is introduced above the jet for combustion.
