Its an 6850 from Agilent.

I think its for the detector.

Is the air added after the column ? 

Or with the Sample,Makeup and Fuel ?

Hi mr.white,

It may help to know which GC models you are talking about. Carrier gas flows through the column. The other description of gases sounds like it was possibly detector gases , make up and detector supply possibly which are added inside the detector itself. I would need some more specifics to go deeper.

Typically N2 would be the make up for an FID and H2 would be your fuel along with air to support a flame.

Take a look at the below graphic. It shows the entry points of each gas. Helium enters the bottom as carrier, H2 and Makeup gas (N2 in your case) enter from the side at the jet, air is introduced above the jet for combustion.

So the Air is introduced after the column. ( Makes Sense )

So there is no oxygen which can interact with the mobile phase / analytical substance to be examined.

The oxygen that is needed for the flame to lit.
