Checking the Calibrant Level in your Agilent LC/MS System

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent LC/MS System

Issue

Instructions on how to check the level of calibrant in your LC/MS system, and refill the calibrant bottle if necessary.

Requirements

Checking the level of calibrant should be performed weekly, or more often if frequent instrument tuning is required.

Steps to Follow

  1. Open the door or remove the cover at the front of the instrument to reveal the calibrant bottle
  2. Carefully check that the intake tube that draws up calibration solution into the CDS system is fully immersed in solution, see Figure 1.

Tips: Figure 1 shows a Q-TOF system with both a calibrant bottle (right), and a bottle for reference mass solution (left). 6100 and 6400 series LC/MS instruments have one calibrant bottle.
  3. If the calibration solution is within a few millimeters of the end of intake tube, then refill the calibrant bottle. See the following articles for detailed instructions on this procedure.
