  • Considerations when Combining LC Modules of Different Series

This Information Applies To: Agilent LC Systems Issue While it is possible to combine modules from different HPLC series such as 1100, 1200, 1260 or 1290 series to create a functioning LC system, there are some important topics to consider. Resolution When combining instruments of different series there are several firmware, hardware, software, and operating scale considerations. Firmware Agilent releases LC firmware in sets for modules, which have been tested for interoperability...
  • Where to Find the Firmware Version Info of an HPLC Module

This Information Applies To: All Agilent HPLC modules. Issue: The firmware is stored on a HPLC module's mainboard. It's a set of parameters, low-level commands, and functions stored on the internal memory of a HPLC module and required for its operation. The firmware consists of two independent components: - a non-instrument-specific part, called Resident Firmware - an instrument-specific part, called Main System Firmware Note: As functions are constantly being optimized, bugs fixed, and compatibility...
  • Firmware Update Required if New RFID Tag Readers Used

This Information Applies To: Agilent LC modules with RFID tag readers Issue Agilent uses RFID (radio frequency identification tag) tag readers in some HPLC components such as detector lamps and flow cells, pump heads, purge valve and mixers. However, the original RFID tag is no longer available in the worldwide market. For this reason, the RFID tags in recent Agilent assemblies have been changed to a new version. It may be required that the affected instrument to undergo a change to a compatible...
  • Troubleshooting Remote/Cluster Partner Missing Error

This Information Applies To: All Agilent LC systems. Issue: A cluster is partnership between modules. Most modules are linked to other modules automatically, without intervention from the user, but sometimes the cluster is configured manually. Examples: 1. To work as a ‘one module’ unit, independent modules must be clustered (e.g.: Two G1361A prep pumps are clustered to make one gradient pump). 2. A valve pressure cluster between the 1290 Infinity pump and external valves allows for correct...

How to Update or Downgrade Firmware for Agilent LC and CE Modules

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent LC and CE Systems compatible with Lab Advisor

Issue:

Firmware is updated or downgraded when new features are added, or to fix some system bugs. It also solves compatibility issues when a new module is added to an existing system or a new hardware. Some regulatory requirements can also trigger a firmware upgrade or downgrades.

This procedure requires the use of Agilent Lab Advisor Software.

Resolution:

Platforms and Firmware sets

Firmware differs depending on the function and complexity of the mainboard contained in each module in your LC stack. For example, an oven is a hosted module. That's why it doesn't include any LAN or USB ports. Modules that do not contain any LAN port rely on CAN inter-module communication for Firmware changes.

  • A.xxx firmware: This type of module doesn't have a LAN port. It applies to all Agilent 1100 series modules from 1995.
  • B.xxx firmware: This type of module does have a LAN port. It applies on some Agilent 1200 series modules, on 1260 and 1290 detectors and 1290 pumps.
  • C.xxx firmware: This type of module doesn't have a LAN port and requires a other module as host with the same firmware (via CAN).
  • D.xxx firmware: This Firmware type applies to Agilent Infinity II series modules. All modules must have the latest firmware from the same set.

Agilent always recommends using the latest module firmware revision of a firmware set in order to avoid interoperability issues.

Always use latest firmware from the same set as it was only tested within a set. Not complying with this rule can generate problems or may not work at all.

A module with firmware C, must be in sync with a module with B or D firmware.

Firmware Update Procedure

Load the firmware set and update both the resident and the main firmware on the module in need.

  1. Open Agilent Lab Advisor software and connect the system to update.
  2. Go to Firmware Update.
  3. Select the Folder for the firmware sets.
  4. Lock the system.
  5. If different sets of firmware are available, they can be selected for each modules and each type of firmware.
  6. Click Update once each setting has been selected (see Figure1 for reference). During this process, the lights of the modules selected for update will be flickering.
