This Information Applies To: Agilent GC and GC/MS systems with Agilent Gas Clean Carrier Gas Filters
Issue
After the replacement of a Gas Clean Carrier Gas FIlters, an increase in the Nitrogen percentage may be observed during the Tune, or Air and Water Check for GC/MS Systems. If other sources of leak have been already checked, a purge of the filter is required.
Background
The Gas Clean Carrier filter is shipped prefilled with nitrogen gas. This Nitrogen would contaminate other type of carrier gasses, such as Helium or Hydrogen. The Tune Report or the Air and Water Check will show an increase in the nitrogen percentage, but the Oxygen level will remain low.

Steps to Follow
Lower any heated zone temperatures on the instrument to less than 100 °C.
Set any split vent flows (purge flows) on the GC to 400 mL/min (see Figure 2).
Maintain the high split vent flow for 15 minutes.
Load the analytical method to restore normal split vent flow as well as normal temperature in the GC/MS system
Perform the air and water check to verify the Nitrogen content.
Repeat steps 2 to 5 if the nitrogen level is not coming down to acceptable level.
If the nitrogen level is low enough, perform the autotune.
