Troubleshooting Inlet High Pressure in GC Systems

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent GC Systems

Issue

The GC carrier gas actual pressure exceeds its pressure setpoint.

Resolution 

Split/splitless inlet, MMI inlet, PTV inlet, or volatiles interface

  • Check the split vent trap line for contamination or an abnormal restriction. Run the split vent restriction test from the GC front panel.
  • Verify that the correct consumables are selected.
    • Check if the liner is suitable for the selected injection mode (split or splitless injection). It is recommended to use a low pressure-drop liner for split analyses (for example, p/n 5183-4647)
    • Install a high flow gold seal p/n 5182-9652 if using a liner that causes high restriction (split/splitless inlet), or if using a high split vent flow.
  • Check the gold seal on the split/splitless inlet for contamination.  
  • Check for a plugged liner.
  • Replace the split vent filter. 
  • Clean or replace the split vent line.
      
    Warning: Wear gloves and protective glasses to prevent any skin or eye contact with solvent during washing or flushing the tube. Cleaning must be done under a fume hood.

    • Clean the tube by washing with solvent used to prepare your standards, methanol, or hexane.
    • Verify that the method pressure settings for the inlet are above the minimum viable settings available on the GC.

  • Check for a misaligned rotor. If necessary, align the rotor according to the Maintenance manual instructions
