  • Source of Ghost and Carryover Peaks in GC

This Information Applies To: Agilent GC Systems Issue Contamination that creates ghost and carry over peaks can be introduced at different points including sample preparation, introduction, and separation. The additional peaks can cause false positive identifications and/or inaccurate quantitative results. Other chromatographic problems are identified in Basic Troubleshooting for GC Systems. Regular maintenance of your instrument in accordance with the recommended maintenance schedule will...
  • Baseline Instability in GC

This Information Applies To: Agilent GC Systems Issue Baseline instability that is not reproducible across multiple runs can be introduced at different points including sample introduction, separation, and the detector. The baseline instability causes integration problems, which can lead to inaccurate quantitative or qualitative results. Baseline rises reproducibly, are normal for ramped temperature programs. The change in baseline will be consistent across multiple runs and multiple days...
  • How To Use and Configure Early Maintenance Feedback (EMF) on the Agilent 8890/8860 GC Systems

This Information Applies To: Agilent 8890/8860 GC Systems Issue Early Maintenance Feedback is a useful feature on Agilent GC Systems and software that allows a user to monitor the maintenance needed on their GC. This feature allows for users to get a reminder that maintenance is due on their instrument before it causes a chromatography or even a hardware issue. If you are changing parts on your GC on a scheduled basis, either based on a certain passing of time or a specific number of injections...
  • How to Bake-out the Split/Splitless Inlet (S/SL) on Agilent GC Systems

This Information Applies To: Agilent GC Systems with Split/Splitless Inlet (S/SL) Issue The Split/Splitless Inlet (S/SL) can accumulate contaminants when high boiling point and/or high molecular weight compounds are present in the injected sample. Often these compounds are present from the sample matrix. The accumulated contamination is not effectively removed using the analysis method parameters. These accumulated contaminants may appear in the chromatogram as ghost or artifact peaks. They...

Inlet Liners for GC High Concentration Analyses

Answer

This Information Applies To: Agilent GC Systems with Split/Splitless (S/SL) inlet

Issue

Different liners are required for different high concentration, split analysis techniques including:

  • General use liners
  • Auto inject, general use
  • Auto inject, viscous sample
  • Auto inject, dirty matrix
  • Manual slow injection
  • Headspace (HS) and purge and trap (P&T).

Inlet liner choice is part of method validation, and the same liner type must be used consistently while running that method. For help with identifying the correct inlet liner for your application, see GC Liner Selector Tool.
