Using the Solvent Vent Calculator

Issue

The Solvent Vent Calculator estimates the Agilent solvent vapor exit (SVE) accessory valve timing based on solvent type, oven temperature, vent flow, and pressure.

Background

The Solvent Vent Calculator is preinstalled in OpenLab CDS software. It is available free for use with all other systems and is included in a suite of GC calculators can be downloaded and installed from Agilent.com. 

Requirements

A flow meter to measure flows from the GC.

  • A recommended flow meter is the ADM Flow Meter (p/n G6691A)
  • Adapters and spare parts for the ADM to suit your needs can be found here 

Steps to Follow

To estimate the valve timing for an analysis using the SVE (Figure 1):

  1. Set the desired pressure units (kPa, psi, or bar), if available.
  2. Select your solvent type from the Solvent list.
  3. Enter the Oven Temperature (°C) during the elimination phase.
  4. Enter the Vent Flow out of SVE port 1 (measured with the valve On).
  5. Enter the injected sample amount into the Injected Volume (µL) field.
  6. Enter the Inlet Pressure during the elimination phase. Select either absolute or gauge units.
  7. Enter the Outlet Pressure, the pressure at the exit of SVE port 1. (Typically this is ambient pressure.) Select either absolute of gauge units.
  8. Set a Residual Solvent value, in percent. This value is the amount of solvent that you wish to remain with the sample.

    These calculated values change when ever a parameter is modified.

  9. The Suggested Purge Time is 90% of the calculated Purge Time. Use it as a reference point for setting the vent time. Increasing the vent time will increase the amount of solvent vented, while decreasing the vent time will decrease it.
