Setting up a G7617B autosampler to run 1536 plates what do I need to have installed hardware wise?

Do you mean the G7167B multisampler?  Looks like the highest density supported is 384 well plates according to the User Manual, page 51.

yes-up to 16 rows and 24 columns = 384 max
