If I run a standard of n-alkanes ranging from C10-C40 on GC/FID, with each component being the same concentration, should each peak have the same area?
Ideally yes, but you need to account for something we call GC inlet discrimination. Meaning, based on your inlet temperature, you might not be able to quantitatively evaporate/transfer the heavier n-alkanes on your column.
