Can I turn off the filament of a Varian 979 leak detector?

This is the answer I received from the vacuum division:

It won’t hurt the machine to use it as a pump, but why not just use the
roughing pump alone without the leak detector? It would pump much faster
directly attached.

The filament on that model cannot be turned off.
