FLD: emission encounter index calculation failed (init-phase)

Recently, I got an error after performing a FLD wavelength accuracy test, which failed. Now I can't run it because it is sending "FLD: emission encounter index calculation failed (init-phase)". So, what should I do? Is it something that only technicians can solve? How can I continue working without the FLD module?

  • Yes, the FLD got manufactured in 2011. Very likely the instrument needs a new Emission monochromator. There is something wrong with counting the lines on the encoder wheel. Cleaning that area might help, but also needs to be carried out by an Agilent service engineer. This is a time consuming task, I don't think it's any cheaper and there's no guarantee that the issue you see, gets fixed by that. Even if it does, you still have an old monochromator assembly.

  • Each Agilent LC module has two CAN ports at the rear. CAN cables are used to connect to the next module in the stack. This is how the modules communicate with each other. Turn off the stack and on the FLD remove the CAN cable that comes from the previous module (UV detector, I reckon). In addition, the FLD needs to be removed from the configuration in your CDS (Chromatography Data System), so, in your case, Empower. However, I don't know or use Empower, so you'll need to ask a colleague or call Waters support.

In case the FLD was used as an access point (the module which has a LAN connection to the PC), this needs to be changed to another module, preferably another detector.
