AriaMx Cannot Open Data File

Issue

The AriaMx analysis software shows an error when attempting to open a data file.

Background

The AriaMx analysis software can show several errors when something is wrong with the run file. The most common errors are:

File Type is not Recognized and Cannot be Opened

If you attempt to open a file generated with an AriaDx (.adxd) with the AriaMx analysis software the following error is triggered: [file name] file type is not recognized and cannot be opened (Figure 1).

The File Cannot be Opened Because There are Problems with the Contents

The error message The file[file name] cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents can appear when there is a file format issue (Figure 2).

Resolution 

  1. Check if you have installed the correct version of the software. The Aria software exists in a AriaMx and AriaDx version depending on which is selected during software installation. The AriaMx analysis software cannot open files generated by the AriaDx instrument. The AriaMx analysis software can only open files generated by the AriaMx (.amxd).
  2. Check that the file name only contains letters and numerals. Changing the name of the file on the laptop will not change the name within the file itself. The name is stored in the files metadata. To remove other characters, you can try renaming the file on the instrument, and then transfer the file to the PC via a USB or within the AriaMx PC software.
  3. Check that the laptop has the regional settings set to English US. On Windows 10:
    • Navigate to the PCs region settings. The region settings can be opened by searching for Region settings in the Windows search box.
    • Select Additional date, time & regional settings > Change date, time, or number formats.
    • In the Region menu that appears, click Additional settings....
    • Set the Decimal symbol, Digit grouping symbol, and List separator as shown in Figure 3.
