i.e. the syntax is now clear to me, thank you very much. It must be due to the value (RSDRtDimethyl).

Make sure that the field you are setting up conditional formatting on further down on the report template than where the RSDRtDimethyl variable is defined. Reports are generated from the top down and left to right, so variables can only be used further down and/or further right than where they are setup. 

Also, try using the expression =Val(RSDRtDimethyl) instead of just =RSDRtDimethyl. Maybe it is not formatted as a number and that is the source of the error.
