Just to be sure: did you change the batteries in the holder? It's not about charging, it's about replacing the batteries, they cannot be charged.

Switch the flowmeter off, open the battery compartment, replace the batteries with new ones, close the battery compartment, switch the flowmeter on. If it still shows the same shutdown behaviour, please contact the office you bought it and ask to replace the flowmeter.
