Hi, 
 C1 to C8 acids can be analyzed by GC without prior derivatization on apolar (DB-5ms type columns or CP-FFAB CB (free fatty acid phase), but it is a more difficult analysis. Normally derivatization to the methyl esters (FAMEs) is done prior to analyses and then apolar columns, medium polar ones or, if stereochemistry is needed, highly polar columns like CP-Sil 88 for FAMEs. 
 A little more input is needed to give you a more fitting advise.
