Mass spec will not turn on

Good Morning,

We have a 7890A GC fitted with a 5977 MSD. Out of no where the MSD turned off. log states the it cannot be connected to and it's off.

We cannot regain power to the MSD. Tried checking the cables going in, even replacing them with spare ones. Using a different power socket which we know works.Opened up and removed the metal PCB case fromt eh MS, checked all the fuses and none had blown. There are pictures underneath of this (they are a little dusty though).

Does anyone have any siggestions on what is wrong with this instrument? I have read somewhere that a side board maybe damaged, I'm assuming the power board where the power first enters the MSD but I want to exhaust other options first before commiting to such a venture.

Thanks

  • Good morning ,

I was readind this conversation thread and figured the exact same thing is happening to me right now. I have a 6120 Quadrupole LC/MS and it was doing fine until it misteriously turned off last friday and would not power on since then. This week Ive been trying to figure this out and have already done exactly as you did (checked the cables, power socket, fuses, they all work fine). I have also read in Chromforum about an answer to this same problem that said

"Finally identified the problem. Side electronic board died and tested with 5973 used board. After replacing defective side board, everything came back".

Was your problem also solved by replacing the board? Or did you find another solution? Why would the board have died? Thanks for sharing!
