Error code in VARIAN CARY 100

Dear, Sr

When I want to go to execute any program in WinUV software, it gives a message "Error code 9:1 CSM error,CSM error"

It seems a comunnication error, the instrument is connected via GPIB-USB-HS.

Anyone knows how to do?

  • Hi Jorgeeche,

this error message often appears when there is an issue with either the old GPIB cable or if there is some electromagnetic disturbance inside the instrument (this is usually solved by ferrite clamps an engineer can apply on one of the flat ribbon cables inside the instrument). If the GPIB cable is not the issue and you need the ferrite clamp fix, please contact your local CustomerCare support team.

Regarding the GPIB cable: if you still have the old style cable (thick grey cable, 25-pins connector), you are probably running on a windows 7 or older pc (WinUV 3.0 maybe?). Current version is 4.2 (B470), but as the Cary 100 is obsoleted you probably cannot get this version software anymore to upgrade to Windows 10. For this upgrade you will need an GPIB-USB adapter to communicate, but this same adapter might solve your issue on the old pc/WInUV version as well, as long as you are running a WinUV version 4.x. Contact your local CustomerCare team and ask for part no. 7910051600. Just replace the grey GPIB cable with this USB adapter, when the isntrument is powered off. In the WinUV 4.x versions, the drivers should already be installed, but you could check to see if yiou can find National Instruments" or NI software.

After connecting, power on the instrument and check device manager to see if the drivers are working properly.

It looks similar to this, but they are now black:
