fluorescence vs phosphorescence modes

Hello everyone,

I just started a new job and the university has a Cary Eclipse fluorimeter, which I'm not quite familiar with. Could someone explain the difference between the fluorescence and phosphorescence modes? I don't mean what each word means in photophysics, but what do each mode of the instrument do. I've used the fluorescence mode to collect steady-state emission spectra of some coordination compounds and it seemed to work fine, so I'm not sure when you'd want to use the phosphorescence mode. All the literature I've found in the Agilent site has been less than helpful.

Thank you!
