WinDirStat Computer Troubleshooting Tool - Instructions for Download and Installation

WinDirStat is a third party utility to investigate issues where the hard dis drive perpetually fills up. This program augments the discovery of large files on the hard drive.  The free utility called WinDirStat. WinDirStat stands for Windows Directory Statistics. It’s completely open-source, and published under the GNU General Public License (version 2), which means we are free to use it for corporate use. This utility will quickly scan the contents of any and all hard drives and display a Picasso-like diagram of the contents. To use WinDirStat:


  1. Download and install the WinDirStat utility from at Once installed, you can copy the C:\Program Files (x86)\WinDirStat.exe file to a thumb drive and use it on another computer without needing to install it.  Once running, choose to scan either the whole PC – or the specific partition you are concerned about (click OK):
  2. The program will scan the appropriate drives in a relatively short period of time.
  3. When completed the resulting graphic illustrates the hard drive usage.
  4. Consult with your local IT department to determine files that can be deleted.  Do NOT delete any files without knowledge of the impact of these files.
  5. One file entitled hiberfil.sys is an excellent candidate for deletion. This particular file is the hibernation cache that Windows uses when the PC goes into hibernation mode. In this case, you cannot simply delete hiberfil.sys; Windows will just re-create it later. You must disable hibernation first.

    To disable hibernation in Windows 7: Open a command prompt with administrative privileges, type in this command and hit enter: powercfg.exe –h off  Afterwards, you are free to delete the hiberfil.sys file.
