Root Element Missing - LC/MS Acquisition or GC/MS Acquisition

I'm trying to open data acquisition on MassHunter v8.02.  I'm getting this root element missing error.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software but the error keeps happening.  I'm able to open the offline method editor with no issues.  I thought it was the default method causing the error.  I have deleted the method and also replaced the method with a working method.  Anybody have any other ideas on what is causing this?

  • Hello  ,

This type of error typically indicates that one of the settings files has become corrupted. These are stored in the MassHunter folder, so those are not always cleared on reinstalls unless you rename that folder.

To resolve this make certain the acq engines are shutdown. Then go to the MassHunter\AppStore folder and delete or move all of the .xml files in that folder and also the ones in MassHunter\AppStore\_default\Console. This will reset all of your acq preferences and should then allow acq to launch.

  • Hello. Thank you  for that answer! I talked to an Agilent technical representative and he came up with the same solution. But, we have the B.07.06.2704 version of Masshunter. What would be the data path for those files in that case? I am looking at the forum while I still wait for them to call back.

    Thanks

  • GC/MS MassHunter default file locations are different than LC/MS and GC/MS MassHunter Acquisition also does not give that error - or at least I don't find any reference to it.

When do you see an error and what is it?
If it stops at MH Acq startup, go to Config and reconfigure the instrument. All you have to do is something like switch the MS from 5977 to 5975 and back again, then save. This will reload the default methods and tune files.  If that works, then the previous method that was trying to be loaded on startup is corrupt.  Edit the entire method, tune again, and it will work.

If it starts at MH Acq startup but gives a generic programming error (like "object reference not set to instance of an object" or similar) then close MH Acq. Use Config to create an Instrument 2 with no GC and try it. If it does not throw the error with an MS only session, close and reload the GC driver package.
