Can MassHunter Bioconfirm open files outside of the Project folder?

We want to run Bioconirm on a shared VM and read files from a shared network drive. It would be inconvenient to move our raw data files from the network drive to the local drive, thus maintaining two directories. Being able to read files directly from the network drive would speed things up for us. I've tried to come at this from several angles but haven't been able to figure it out. Is this an install setting? Am I missing a trick in the install? Is there a magic project number that is "any folder" that could be used in the command line call?

  • Hello  ,

What you are observing is by design. MassHunter applications cannot safely load data directly from or write data directly to a networked file system.

The data analysis applications in the MassHunter suite were not built with fault tolerance for networking interruptions. There is a risk of data loss or data corruption inherent to a networked file system and MassHunter does not have mitigations for this risk.

The technical control preventing you from loading data stored on a networked volume can be bypassed using a feature of the PC’s file system called “Symbolic Links”.

It must be understood, however, that using this or other unsupported approaches to load data from a shared volume will not reduce the risk of data loss or data corruption associated with processing data stored on a networked file system. Agilent does not warrant or guarantee the accuracy or integrity of data files stored or loaded in this manner. This solution has not been formally tested by Agilent and is generally not recommended.

Alternatively – our Networked Workstation products can solve this issue by keeping the data stored and accessible from an OpenLab ECM XT server. In this configuration, data movement is carefully orchestrated by OpenLab Shared Services and network transfer risks are well mitigated. If you would like any more information about our Networked Workstation offering – please check out our website: https://www.agilent.com/en/video/masshunter-compliance-ready.

Lastly – if you continue to use a networked file system – it would be recommended to upload and download the data using File Explorer before and after processing the data in MassHunter. This would ensure that the data was local during the time it is being processed in the data analysis application.

  • Thank you. I had tried shortcuts but didn't consider symbolic links. For 15 years, we used older versions of MassHunter (per OpenLab versions) on our VM systems (which have very fast, short network connections to our drive servers, basically on the same rack) to read raw files with no issues. Thank you also for alerting us to the Networked Workstation option. I don't think we need that, but it is certainly worth knowing about.
