Any advice to protect Infinity 1290 and MS 6490 from Power Surges and Power Spikes?

Not sure if this is the reason but we got the turbo down after a storm. Maybe bad luck, but also it is possible we got a power spike? Just in case, what Power Surges and Power Spikes protector are advise to support this instrumen? Thanks

  • Hi ,

Yes power spikes from unscheduled power interruptions can cause damage to sensitive electronic circuits. Another contributing factor is that when power is lost to the LC/MS running under high vacuum the rough pump will stop, causing a big and sudden loss of rough vacuum, but the turbos are still running at high speed. This causes stress on the turbo pumps as they are rather abruptly hit with pressures that they are not designed to deal with and rapid de-acceleration occurs, potentially putting stress on the turbo pumps themselves. This is why venting of the MS is normally done in a very controlled manner where turbo pumps slowly wind down, then the rough pump is switched off once the turbo pump speed is reduced to safe levels.

Agilent do not officially recommend the use of UPS with the MS itself. The problem with using an UPS on LC/MS instruments is finding a UPS that can provide the level of power that the instrument requires. Often the current draw required, especially when pumping down the instrument is more than affordable UPS systems can supply in the short term. The use of UPS would be a specific issue you would need to discuss with your local Agilent engineer that knows your site requirements and the specifications of the UPS that you are considering in your budget.
