Agilent Ultivo MS capillary issues

We have an Agilent Ultivo MS but have to replace the capillary every 3-4months. Cleaning simply does not help, and no we do not have strange dirty samples or solvents. The cost of these things necessitated us to simply switch of the MS because it is unaffordable. Just wondering if anyone else experienced a similar issue regarding capillaries that simply does not last very long.

  • I have seen this on a couple of systems! Did you find an answer to what's going on?  The only time I've seen this handled it was some sort of electronics issue, I think.

  • Could not yet figure it out and the system is switched off until I figure out what to do. I was thinking of replacing the 'canted coil springs' but the SA distributer of Agilent (Chemetrix) does not want to provide details on how to do it, so I must fly a bloke in from Cape Town and pay for it to replace a couple of springs. To be honest this system has had issues from day 1

  • Where are you located?  Do you have a service contract?

I'm sorry to hear that, is it a refurb or was it new?  These systems can be really reliable and worth the investment, but I understand your point and have had to argue to get things working as reliably as it should be.  I bumped your question, hopefully that will help with visibility.

  • Potchefstroom, South Africa. It was a new system but had major issues (electronics) from day 1. Hopefully some one will be able to send me the guidelines of how to change the coil springs

  • Hi  ,

I am sorry to read that you are having this much issues with your Ultivo. Please do let me know why you are replacing the ion transfer capillary every 3-4 months? Is it because your signal is getting low, charging effect, burning marks on the ion transfer capillary, etc.?

Please also make sure you are using the proper purity of nitrogen and that there is no water in the nitrogen (if nitrogen generator, when was the last PC performed on the generator as when the membrane dries, you can see black particulates on the RMSN-4 filters and sometime in the system).

We have seen recently customers using Dewars where some water was present in the lines supplying the source. This can cause arking, sensitivity issues, etc.
