Why does RID signal shut down for no apparent reason?

Hi,

I've been experiencing some issues with a RID, used as the only detector. At any moment, and for no apparent reason, the RID stops (yellow label), displaying in the tooltip a "balancing error". When clicking then on "Balancing", it doesn't help, but opening the purge valve for a few minutes fixes the problem (green label back). This happens more and more, at the start or during a run.

I use HPLC grade water as the eluent, and the temperature of the RID is 40 °C.

Has someone come accross a similar problem?

It´s a normal warning or to phrase it differently, a notification to the user that what is seen on the sample side of the cell differs too much from what´s on the reference side. You should read through the user manual, which is on https://www.agilent.com/cs/library/usermanuals/Public/G7162AUser.pdf (can also be used if your RID is a G1362A - from an optical unit point of view they´re identical). A purge of the reference side of the cell is recommended on a regular basis. This can even be done in an automated way. You also might have to check the so-called optical balance, see page 102.
