5975B Detector cleaning - contamination, diffusion pump oil after power outage

After a day of multiple power outages I found that the detector chamber is contaminated with oil. From the front window it looks foggy inside but that is probably just a layer of oil on the window.  Any ideas on cleaning short of replacing everything which is $$$$$?

  • It's probable that the rough pump's anti-suckback valve failed so when the power went down, air went backwards through the rough pump, possibly carrying rough pump oil up the hose into the diffusion pump, and the air getting into the diffusion pump caused the fluid to go everywhere.  This is a catastrophic backstream.

There is a chance of cleaning it all up, but it will take time, effort, and lots of solvent and lint-free cloths. It may require taking apart and cleaning everything inside the analyzer chamber. Santovac 5 diffusion pump fluid is soluble in acetone or toluene.

It also might not be fixable.
