Environmental data: How do you associate surrogates with targets for methods like 8270 and 8260?

e.g., if the recovery of SVOC surrogate 2,4,6-tribromophenol is low in method 8270, which compounds would you consider to be impacted? All the acid-extractables, only acid-extractables within similar RTs, or compounds that are quantitated under the same internal standard that TBP is?

There is some disagreement about whether being in the same IS grouping is relevant.

  • Is this for a sample or QC? The internal standards usually cover a specific region of the chromatogram. EPA assigns these in method 8270E. Surrogate recoveries can be impacted by multiple things. Are all acidic compound recoveries low? Or just one? Sometimes poor extraction techniques can result in low recoveries of certain compounds. On the other hand if you have an internal standard that is outside of the acceptable range it will bias anything associated with it high or lower than the true value.
