Issues with Tuning on GCMS Agilent 8890 - 5977B

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with tuning my GCMS system (Agilent 8890 - 5977B) and could use some advice. Here’s a detailed timeline of the situation:

  • December 3: I replaced the column.
  • December 4: I performed a mass tuning, which seemed to complete successfully (I’ve attached the results below). However, I’m still learning to use the instrument properly, so I’m not entirely sure if the results were as they should be.
I ran a sequence of analyses without issues.
  • December 5: I replaced the column again.
  • December 6: The tuning began failing consistently with the error: "Tune action stopped: Gain and offset = 0 and peaks are too narrow!".

I contacted a technician for support, and here’s what we’ve tried so far:

  1. Checked for potential leaks (none found).
  2. Cleaned the source and replaced the filaments.
  3. Isolated the mass and repeated the verification steps.
  4. Restored the default tuning files.

Unfortunately, none of these actions resolved the issue. The technician confirmed that the calibrant quantity is sufficient, so that’s not the problem.

When I attempt a manual tune using the parameters from the last successful tuning, I can see the calibrant peaks, but their intensity appears to be very low. I’ve attached both the results of this manual tuning and the failed attempts for reference.

I’ve also seen recommendations online about performing a quadrupole calibration, but I don’t think this is something I can do on my own.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have suggestions on what else I could try?

Thank you in advance for any guidance or insights!
