SCD vs FPD for Sulfur Compounds

I would really appreciate the communities feedback on their experiences with these detectors.  We have a potential application looking at mid/low level (low ppm) sulfur compounds like H2S and mercaptans in a matrix of dimethyl sulfoxide.  SCD seems to have a bad reputation regarding reproducibility and may be overkill.  Would FPD be good enough?

  • FPD is simpler to use but SCD is more sensitive.  For low ppm the FPD should work fine.  Be aware that the FPD response to sulfur is quadratic, so you'll need multiple standards to generate a calibration curve.

Since both detectors are selective for sulfur and your matrix is a sulfur compound, it may be better to use a valve or Deans Switch to divert the matrix away from the FPD/SCD to avoid saturating the detector.
