Checking and Modifying LC Early Maintenance Feedback (EMF) Counters

This information applies to: Agilent LC systems.

Issue

When performing maintenance or troubleshooting on an HPLC system, it is helpful to have access to the EMF counters that are available in Lab Advisor and chromatography data systems (CDS) software. These EMF counters allow users to track the use of the LC components, and to help with system troubleshooting and the planning of system maintenance activities.

Requirements

  • Agilent Lab Advisor software installed in the controlling PC.
  • The LC system created in the Lab Advisor software:
    • The basic version allows users to see the counters in Lab Advisor,
    • The advanced version is needed to modify the limits of the EMF counters.

Steps to Follow

  1. Connect HPLC to the Lab Advisor software. Then, select the EMFs tab to display the current EMF counters (Figure 1).

  2. There is a list of configured LC modules with many EMF counters (Figure 2). The EMF counters will vary depending upon the type of module (pump, autosampler, column compartment, detector, etc.).
    • If users have the advanced version of Lab Advisor, they can set the individual limits for each counter to their preference.
    • If users only have the basic version of Lab Advisor, the limits will be set automatically to the default Agilent limits and they cannot be changed. EMF information is saved to the instrument mainboards.

  3. Whenever maintenance is performed and consumables are changed, it is recommended to reset any related counters.
  4. When using chromatography data systems software, a visual representation of the Lab Advisor EMF counters is shown in the module status bar (Figure 3). This gives the user an indication when maintenance is needed to ensure maximum instrument uptime.
    • Green: The EMF values are within the specified limits.
    • Yellow: One or more of the specified limits have been exceeded.
    • Gray: The EMF is in an unknown state, for example, the module is disconnected
